The History of Spring Lake.

Spring Lake was started by the Strickland family. Leo worked for the Soil Conservation Service and in 1982 the Soil Conservation Service would pay a percentage of the cost of lake construction, 50 to 75%.

The lake was built on property owned by the Stricklands and was operated as a campground and pay to fish lake. There was a store and a bath house, a swimming beach and many campsites, along with concrete and wooden picnic tables at most of the campsites. Some of the concrete picnic tables still exist around the lake and some of the campsites are still plainly visible, as they are on Lot 5 and 6.

Mike Steele’s house is the original bath house and the swimming beach was lots 3 and 4. Boy Scouts may have camped there, I am not sure about that. Spring Lake was open to the public but you had to pay to fish and or camp. Leo and Vera Strickland may have had special arrangements with the Boy Scouts. There was a store for basics near the boat ramp but it was torn down.

My first fishing trip to Spring Lake was prior to 1975.
My father, Doctor Wendell Newcomb, bought Lot 5 in January of 1982. And built our cabin in 1984. Dad said he and his wife, Lucille, regularly ate fish dinners with Howard and Martha Driver.
